Executed in 1964, Butterfly is a monumental, museum-scale masterwork from Toni Onley’s celebrated 1960s abstract period. Spanning over five feet in width, the artwork features heavy, angular canvas collage elements layered dynamically over a fluid background of muted beige, soft slate blue, and charcoal washes. By pasting cut and torn canvas shapes directly onto the primary canvas support, Onley created a rich, tactile relief that balances geometric structure with organic space. The central assemblage of layered forms subtly captures the weightless, floating spirit of its title while remaining entirely non-objective.
1964 marked a triumphant peak in Onley’s career. Coming directly on the heels of his 1963 RCA Zacks Award win for Polar #1 (which was selected by Director Sir John Rothenstein for the permanent collection of the Tate Gallery in London), Butterfly showcases Onley working at the absolute height of his creative confidence. In these large-scale canvas collages, Onley masterfully bridged the gap between European lyrical abstraction, Mexican modernist experimentation, and West Coast spatial awareness.
Born on the Isle of Man, Onley immigrated to Canada in 1948 and became one of West Coast modernism's most vital figures. While later widely celebrated for his serene landscapes, Onley’s early 1960s canvas collages remain his most historically significant and critically acclaimed contribution to Canadian abstract art.
