Description
In Hermosa (2019), Tim Gardner depicts pedestrians moving along the coastal boardwalk at Hermosa Beach, California at sunset. Working from photographic sources, Gardner juxtaposes fixed architectural elements, including a commercial building and a low concrete seawall inscribed with "Eleventh Street," against a multi-layered sunset sky and distant pier.
Gardner’s practice examines vernacular leisure culture and atmospheric light in Western North America. The composition employs controlled watercolour washes to capture the intense chromatic gradient of the sky, balancing structured geometric forms with candid human figures in transit.
