Description
In Venice Pier (2022), Tim Gardner depicts a solitary figure overlooking the Pacific Ocean from the pier at Venice, California. Working from candid snapshot photography, Gardner translates a momentary image into a controlled study of light, architectural scale, and spatial depth. The composition relies on broad horizontal bands of the concrete foreground, ocean, and expansive blue sky, punctuated by the sharp red figure at center.
Gardner’s practice interrogates contemporary North American leisure and regional identity through the dual traditions of photorealism and Western landscape painting. By rendering vernacular photographic sources through precise watercolour washes, Venice Pier examines the tension between personal memory, mediated imagery, and formal pictorial structure.
