This monumental contemporary installation by Vancouver-based artist James Nizam features two large-scale geometric works designed to be exhibited together. The pairing sets up a powerful conceptual dialogue: the left panel presents a high-contrast archival print featuring clean, repeating vectors and linear paths, while the right panel materializes those same structural logics into a three-dimensional physical space, utilizing actual architectural wood mouldings to construct a deep, light-catching relief.
Nizam’s practice regularly investigates how light, time, and spatial boundaries interact. By presenting a highly exclusive 1/3 print alongside a completely unique 1/1 mixed-media panel, the installation acts as a functional shadow machine. The chevrons and sharp directional lines mirror the data-tracking methodologies of architectural and astronomical tools, creating a shifting optical illusion of depth that changes continuously based on the ambient lighting of the room.
