Michelangelo Buonarroti, The Torment of Saint Anthony, c. 1487–1488
Saint Anthony is lifted into the sky by a swarm of demons, all spikes, scales and claws, while a calm river landscape stretches out below. Michelangelo painted it at around 12 or 13, based on a famous engraving by the German artist Martin Schongauer. According to his biographer Vasari, he went to the fish market to study scales and fins so his monsters would look real. It's believed to be his earliest known painting, and it now hangs in the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.
