The Virgin sits with a book while the young Christ reaches for it, watched by the infant John the Baptist and a pair of angels. On the left, two more angels were never finished and survive only as grey silhouettes. Michelangelo painted it in his early twenties and abandoned it, and for years experts argued over whether it was his at all. It takes its name from an 1857 exhibition in Manchester, where it first drew wide attention, and it now hangs in the National Gallery in London.
