John Constable, Cloud, 1821
Rose-tinted clouds drift over a thin strip of horizon while a few birds cut across the sky. Constable called this kind of work "skying," and in the early 1820s he did a great deal of it, painting quickly in oil to capture light and weather as they shifted. Loose, fresh and full of air, these small studies were private experiments rather than finished pictures, and they're now among his most loved works.
