A tiger crouches in the grass as lightning cracks and rain whips through the jungle. This was Rousseau's first jungle painting, originally shown in Paris under the title Surprised! Critics laughed at it, but it went on to become one of his best-known works, and it now hangs in the National Gallery in London.
