John Constable, Sky Study with Rainbow, 1827
A pale rainbow arcs across a heavy grey sky, painted in quick washes of watercolour. Constable was fascinated by rainbows and studied the science behind them, sketching diagrams of how they form. They show up again and again in his work, most famously in his great painting of Salisbury Cathedral. This study strips everything else away and leaves just the sky and the light.
