Alfred Stieglitz, Rebecca Strand, 1922
Two hands cradle a dark glass, a single window caught in its reflection. The hands belong to Rebecca Salsbury Strand, a painter and the wife of photographer Paul Strand, one of Stieglitz's closest followers. In 1922, Stieglitz made a series of portraits of her that are among the most intimate of his career, often focusing on details like this rather than her face. She later moved to Taos, New Mexico, and became known in her own right for paintings on the back of glass.
