PRIMARY FLUORESCENTS

Square12 + 2 AP + 1 PT

The Primary Fluorescent lights combine the fluorescent nature of light-creating gasses with primary geometric forms. Among these, the square form is designed for surface placement due to its flat base.

These lights challenge preconceived notions, a design philosophy present from the initial 2012 prototypes to the 2016 final versions. The materials used often possess a deceptive nature.

The initial inspiration stemmed from packaging foam, specifically one type mimicking marble. This sparked the idea of using such materials to solve design challenges, particularly those involving the combination of hard and fragile elements. The layered construction of the foam prototypes proved to be a key takeaway, with each layer serving a distinct purpose within the design. Foam facilitated the creation of the desired shapes and the development of precise, cost-effective moulds for the final aluminum versions.

Aluminum was ultimately selected for several reasons. The lost wax casting method allowed for extremely accurate reproductions of the foam moulds, preserving every detail. Furthermore, the aluminum, as utilized in these lights, shares a visual similarity with stone or concrete, echoing the foam prototypes' marble-like appearance. It also maintains a similar size-to-weight ratio as marble, further paying tribute to the initial prototypes. The result is a unique collection of lights, including the square form, that juxtapose lightness and heaviness, fragility and resilience.

ADDITION presents resonant works by emerging and established Canadian artists alongside international trailblazers in art, design, and object making, where art history, material culture, and contemporary innovation intersect.

Situated in Vancouver’s Armoury / Design District at 1675 West 2nd Avenue, ADDITION fosters dialogue between art, design, and spatial practice, connecting creators, collectors, and the evolving narratives that shape our shared visual landscape. Upcoming programming includes exhibitions in Mexico City and Lima, Peru.

We acknowledge that ADDITION operates on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations and recognize the enduring stewardship and cultural vitality of these communities, whose histories remain integral to Vancouver’s creative identity and continue to inform artistic dialogues across Canada and beyond.
