Ella Armchair by Jacopo Foggini for Edra

Crafted by the visionary designer Jacopo Foggini, the Ella chair stands as a testament to Foggini's exploration of art and design. Foggini, a native of Turin now residing in Milan, views design as a medium to tell compelling stories. He collaborates with Edra to bring to life objects that transcend mere form, imbuing them with poetic narratives.

Jacopo Foggini's artistic journey began during a period of work in his family businesses, where he uncovered the versatile nature of methacrylate and polycarbonate, typically associated with car reflectors. Enchanted by the aesthetic and chromatic qualities of these materials, Foggini ventured into experimentation in the late '90s, using them to craft installations and works of art. Establishing his own gallery in Milan, he authored a book dedicated to his artistic production and integrated his luminous sculptures into the permanent collections of prestigious institutions.

Balancing on the cusp between art and design, Foggini's design exploration focuses on the creative interpretation of plastic materials such as methacrylate and polycarbonate. He skillfully exploits their expressive possibilities, moulding them into daring and unconventional forms. Foggini's creations are akin to "impossible objects," exuding a magical and fairy allure, deftly playing with reflections, colours, and semi-transparencies inherent in the materials.

His early experiments involved inventing a machine capable of heating methacrylate to transform it into a malleable filament, paving the way for artistic interpretations. Relocating to Milan, Foggini established a renowned gallery celebrated for its spectacular chandeliers, which became the focal point of successful installations, including the one designed for the opening ceremony of the 2006 Turin Olympics.

From 2014 onward, Foggini expanded his artistic repertoire to include furniture design. His exclusive collaboration with Edra, a Tuscan design brand known for its imaginative and experimental approach, aligns perfectly with Foggini's poetics of wonder. The Ella chair, a manifestation of this collaboration, reflects not only Foggini's mastery of materials but also his commitment to creating objects that narrate captivating stories beyond their physical form.

ADDITION brings together resonant works by artists and designers whose practices span geographies, generations, and disciplines. Their ideas and objects sit at the meeting point of material culture, memory, and contemporary imagination.

From our home in Vancouver’s Armoury / Design District, we cultivate thoughtful encounters between creators and collectors, between space and narrative, and between the worlds we inherit and the ones we shape. Upcoming programming extends outward to Mexico City and Lima, Peru.

We acknowledge that ADDITION stands on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, whose enduring stewardship and cultural presence continue to guide the creative communities who gather here.
